A Serene Mediterranean: EXPLORA II's Winter 2026–27 Season, Explained
In short: EXPLORA II spends winter 2026-27 in the Mediterranean rather than repositioning to the Caribbean, sailing from November 2026 through March 2027. The season is built around shorter 4- to 9-night journeys, routes reaching Portugal and Morocco, and new onboard programming including Shore-to-Table market visits and a 12-day Ocean Wellness programme. For Canadians it is the rare chance to see the Mediterranean's marquee ports without peak-season crowds.
Most luxury ships leave the Mediterranean in October and chase the sun to the Caribbean. For winter 2026–27, EXPLORA II stays. Explora calls the season A Serene Mediterranean, and it runs from November 2026 through March 2027.
It is a genuinely different proposition from a summer Mediterranean journey, and it suits a specific kind of traveller very well.
What actually changes in winter
The ports do not change. The crowds do.
Barcelona, Palermo, Marseille and the Greek islands in February are the same places they are in July, minus the cruise-ship queues, the 35°C afternoons and the two-hour wait to see anything worth seeing. You trade swimming weather for the version of these cities their residents actually live in. If your Mediterranean fantasy involves a long lunch rather than a beach, winter is objectively the better season.
The itineraries also stretch further west and south than the summer programme, reaching the Atlantic coastlines of Portugal and Morocco alongside the familiar Western and Eastern Mediterranean routes.
Shorter journeys — the real headline
The most useful change for Canadians is length. Explora has built the season around 4- to 9-night escapes, which is unusual for an ultra-luxury line and solves a specific problem.
A 10-day Mediterranean journey plus transatlantic flights plus a day either side is close to a three-week commitment. A 7-night winter journey out of Barcelona is a manageable trip that still justifies the flight. For a first Explora journey — or a second, shorter one to a region you already know — it lowers the barrier considerably.
It also makes the arithmetic on a suite upgrade easier. The nightly rate that feels ambitious across fourteen nights is much more approachable across six.
New onboard programming
Explora has attached specific experiences to this season rather than simply running the ship on a different map:
- Shore-to-Table — local market visits paired with chef-led masterclasses onboard, running in Palermo, Marseille, Barcelona, Bari and Brindisi.
- Meet the Winemaker — tastings and visits at Mediterranean vineyards and estates.
- A Path to Inner Discovery — a 12-day Ocean Wellness programme built around expert-led workshops, restorative movement and sound-led sessions.
- The President’s Journey — 9–15 December 2026, Barcelona to Lisbon, hosted onboard by Explora Journeys President Anna Nash.
The wellness programme in particular fits the season’s logic. A 12-day structured wellness arc is a hard sell in August when everyone wants to be ashore; in January it is close to the whole point.
Who this season suits
It suits you if you have already done the Mediterranean in summer and found it crowded; you want a shorter luxury journey rather than a two-week commitment; you travel for food, wine and cities rather than beaches; or you are a Canadian looking for winter warmth that is milder and more interesting than the Caribbean.
It does not suit you if you want reliable swimming and sunbathing weather — this is a sightseeing and dining season, not a pool season. Mediterranean winters are mild, not hot, and sea days can be grey. If your goal is a tan, the Caribbean journeys are the right call.
Practical notes for Canadians
- Flights are the variable. Winter transatlantic fares from Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver are generally softer than summer, which offsets some of the journey cost. We plan air alongside the booking and always build in an arrival day.
- Pack for a European city, not a cruise. Layers, a proper coat and real walking shoes. There are no formal nights on Explora, but February in Marseille is not terrace weather.
- Shorter journeys sell differently. The 4- to 9-night sailings attract first-time guests and Europeans on short breaks, so the best dates and suite positions go earlier than the length might suggest.
Booking this season
Reservations for the winter 2026–27 collection are open. Explora’s current offers may apply to these journeys, and the season overlaps with the 0% solo supplement programme on selected sailings — a combination worth checking before you settle on dates.
