Explora Journeys vs. Oceania Cruises: An Honest Comparison

This is the classic “premium versus luxury” decision — and many of our Explora clients are Oceania graduates. The lines are excellent at different things.

The category difference

Oceania is upper-premium: outstanding cuisine, country-club-casual atmosphere, and a range of staterooms from insides to lavish top suites. Extras — drinks packages, specialty Wi-Fi tiers, gratuities, excursions — are largely à la carte.

Explora is luxury: there are no cabins at all, only terrace suites from ~377 sq ft, and the fare already includes most dining, premium drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities and thermal-spa access.

The honest price math

Compare headline fares and Oceania usually looks cheaper. Compare totals and it gets close:

• = often within reach of an Explora Ocean Terrace Suite fare — for roughly double the room and a private furnished terrace.

The gap doesn’t always close — short sailings and light drinkers favour Oceania — but you should run the numbers before assuming luxury is out of reach. We do this comparison for clients weekly.

Food

Oceania’s reputation (“the finest cuisine at sea”) is earned, and its specialty restaurants are superb — though bookable slots are limited. Explora’s nine included venues are broader in style, with no fixed seating anywhere and no upcharge except the guest-chef Anthology.

Ships & feel

Oceania’s Vista-class ships carry ~1,200 guests; older R-class ships ~680. Explora carries ~900 on a physically larger ship, which is why it feels emptier. Oceania skews classic; Explora contemporary. Neither has formal nights; Oceania is slightly dressier in practice.
